Greenlit Games: Round 6

So the next round of Greenlit games is out. I decided to take LNS Finger’s job and comment on the new round of games a bit more in depth in blog form. Here are the newest releases:

The latest software titles:

  • PlayClaw - PlayClaw is a pretty powerful little tool for recording. In some ways, I’d say Playclaw is more powerful than the popular FRAPS. This was not surprising considering that this fills a void in Steam’s software collection that caters more to the LPers out there on YouTube. So a good call if I do say so myself.
  • GamePlan - Strategy software that caters clans and guilds. This allows clans and guilds to share strategies on many games. This iPad port to Steam will probably be useless in many casual players hands, but I suspect that it might be a bit more popular during major sales.

The latest games:

  • Agarest: Generations of War - More anime boobies than your nerd goggles have room for! This “Tactical JRPG” contains many popular RPG elements in one scantly clad package. The game has some interesting Anime style art and a morality system. Originally on the PS3 and 360 consoles, the game should make for an interesting port on Steam!
  • Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures - Anyone who has seen James Rolfe videos knows that he is all about retro games, good and bad (mostly bad). I can’t help but watch the trailer and see that snarling face as he takes a swig of his beer and curses at the screen repeatedly. That said, I’m definitely interested to play it and curse at the screen right along with the Angry Video Game Nerd himself.
  • Battle Worlds: Kronos - Turn based strategy game with some rather large worlds. Very sexy art style. Considering how well it did with it’s Kickstarter, I assume this game has a rather large following and will probably do well. It seems like one of those games you need to set aside a few hours for… so don’t plan anything one day and dive in!
  • City of Steam - This game looks to me as if Fable and World of Warcraft had an illegitimate child, this would be that child. Stunning graphics for a F2P game and the gameplay is largely based off pen and paper RPGs (As most RPGs should be). 1 word (or 2 combined into 1 for you grammar nazis out there)  peeked my interest when reading the Greenlit page… Jetpacks.
  • Cradle - Every now and then we are blessed (or cursed) with a game that tries to honestly step outside of the box without being incredibly ridiculous. Cradle puts you on a journey to help your mechanically gorgeous girlfriend to help solve the great mystery of the entertainment park not far from you… yeah. Stunning visuals despite the desolate looking landscapes. The story seems interesting enough to play, but sounds like it can get pretty ridiculous later on. My bet, it will need a demo.
  • Dead State - I tend to believe gamers just seem to naturally love anything with Zombies in it. Rather it be for survival training or just the overall thrill/taboo of killing a reanimated corpse, Zombies have definitely become the big thing these days. Dead State looks to be an overhead adventure game where you try to survive the zombie apocalypse by raiding supplies and fighting off zombies in clunky turn-based style combat. I can’t say that I see the appeal for these type of games since you lose a lot of the shock flare you can get from a more dramatic zombie game, but hey… to each their own.
  • Dead Trigger - Speaking of zombies, here’s a game that’s (cue the finger) being ported over from Android and iOS. It’s a Free to Play FPS where you shoot (get this…) zombies and other Halloween themed creatures in a very similar style of gameplay to CoD: Black Ops’ Zombies mode. Gameplay looks interesting enough, graphics are actually pretty stellar, and since it is Free to Play, it’s definitely worth checking out.
  • Death Inc. - And from Zombies to the Undead, we now come to Death Inc. which is a hybrid Real-Time Strategy and a god game. The game ultimately plays out like an infection time game with Warner Bros styled graphics. The game has an alpha version available for free, definitely worth checking out.
  • Dreamfall Chapters: The Longest Journey - 3D adventure game. If you’ve played Dreamfall, you’ll be very familiar with the gameplay and story of this game. I’m not big on adventure games personally, but Dreamfall is one of those games that comes up very frequently in discussions involving epic adventure games. So this seems to be a no brainer to me.
  • Elsword - Playable on their website currently, this side scrolling free to play beat em’ up action game (say that 5 times fast…) won awards for it’s intense gameplay. Containing both PvE and PvP content and 6 highly customizable characters. I’ve always been a fan of beat em’ up styled games, though this one is a little too platformer-esque for my liking. Not sure how much it pinches the wallet in microtransactions, but certaintly worth a look since it is F2P!
  • Faceless - Multiplayer survival horror game that arms you with nothing but a flashlight and your wits to try and find voodoo dolls to repel your enemy simply known as “The Being”. It’s Slenderman with multiplayer basically. Started out as a HL2 mod, now… it’s just another rip off of every other horror game clone that has come out in the last couple of years. Any one else feel this genre getting a bit bloated yet? Apparently not since this got greenlit. None the less, it’s free to play, and if you like wetting yourself in front of you computer screen with the lights off, then go nuts!
  • Frozen Endzone - Frozen Synapse meets American football. Sold.
  • Hammerwatch - Retro style hack n’ slash with up to 4 players! Easily the game I was most looking forward to on this list. While I wish the camera wasn’t so panned out to give it more of a Link to the Past type feel, it definitely makes up for it with the chaos that multiplayer can ensue. Definitely going on my list of “STOP WHAT YOU’RE DOING AND BUY NOW!” games.
  • Legend of Dungeon - A very lighting intensive dungeon crawler with some rather odd gameplay. I played a beta of this from one of the hundreds of Indie bundles I own and had fun trying to kill shopkeepers (don’t ask).  Can’t say I’ll be rushing to own a copy of the finished product, but it’ll certainly go on the wish list.
  • Pinball Arcade - Somewhere in the US, you’ll find Randark running down the street completely naked in celebration of this game’s greenlight victory. Containing recreations of classic pinball tables, you can play all the old favorites right on your PC. Definitely stoked to see this on Steam and will certainly go on my ”STOP WHAT YOU’RE DOING AND BUY NOW!” list.
  • Planet Explorers - I can’t help but wonder how games like this exist. Not necessarily because it’s a bad idea, but because it’s just so ambitious that only someone with nothing to lose could make it. Open World exploration game that allows you to modify the terrain. Think of it as Minecraft on acid. Interested… but definitely would want a demo of some sort.
  • Rush Bros. - It’s Super Meat Boy with multiplayer and uses your music library to determine your gameplay. Looks fun… but I imagine many o’ controllers will be broken during the life cycle of this game.
  • Shovel Knight - At first glance of the name, I was really worried that this would be some Minecraft clone. I was very pleasantly surprise that it is closer to an old 16-bit platformer. Your shovel is a swiss army knife of pain! Whack fireballs back at opponents, pogo off your enemies skulls and open paths with your shovel to continue your adventure. I’m sold.

We’re always interested to hear YOUR thoughts on the new Greenlit games. Head to our forums and post your opinions!
